Troubleshooting: Color Printing
Here is a chart of some of the common problems and mistakes that you may encounter in
color printing:
Processing Fault |
Probable Cause |
Solution |
| Orange-reddish cast over print or especially intense at edges of print | Light-leak in paper box or plastic bag enclosure (paper has been fogged) |
Pull next sheet from the opposite site of the stack. Use a fresh black bag for transporting paper to Colenta machine. |
| Strong red cast to entire print | Paper was exposed with enlarger still on "white light" setting. | Switch enlarger to "High" or "Low" setting which brings in color filtration. |
| Print is blue, light, out of focus | Enlargement or contact made on the wrong side of paper. | Put next sheet in enlarging easel emulsion side up. |
| Fingerprints | Handling paper with oil, grease or water on hands. | Make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling paper. |
| Cyan Stain | Developer may be exhausted. | Contact lab assistant. |
| Green stain or overall green cast | Developer may be exhausted or contaminated. | Contact lab assistant |
| Brown, black or greenish deposits on print. | Algae or developer scum deposits on the print from dirty rollers. | Contact lab assistant to have Colenta machine cleaned. Deposits may come off by rinse the print in a tray or water and rubbing gently with a sponge. |
| No solid blacks. Areas which should be black are a dark blue. | Exhausted developer. | See lab assistant. |
| Print does not come out of the Colenta machine. | Print is stuck in the machine, wrapped around rollers. | Contact lab assistant to have print removed. Do not place any more prints into the machine until this is corrected. Do not place any print in the machine smaller than 8" x 10"! |
