It is highly recommended that advanced students utilize the private darkrooms for the completion of their photographic work. Access to the Photography AreaÕs Digital Facilities operates under the same guidelines and policies as the traditional private darkrooms.
Anyone wishing to utilize the private labs should sign up for time in advance. Sign-up sheets are posted on each door weekly, every Monday morning. Students may reserve up to eight hours of time per week.
Keys to the Private Labs are checked out through the Cage. All keys are due back to the Cage by noon the next day.
Any classes having lab days have first rights to use of the private labs. No one may ask another student to vacate a lab outside of class time, unless they have previously signed up for that time slot.
All Labs are equipped with 11x14 trays, tongs and beakers. To print larger than 11x14, use the 16x20 trays under the toning sink. 16x20 TRAYS MUST BE RETURNED TO THEIR PLACE UNDER THE TONING SINK AFTER USE.
Private Labs are equipped with easels. There are 11x 14 easels in each lab. 16x20 or 20x24 easels they are available in the Cage for check out. Darkroom related items, negative carriers, grain focusers, etc should be checked out of the cage and are due back to the cage by noon the day following.
Students using the Private Labs are to mix their chemistry from the stock cubes in the Gang Room. At the end of a printing session all chemical trays must be thoroughly cleaned and dried out properly. The chemicals used, except for developer, all contain indicators to denote when they are exhausted. Exhausted developer, stop (which turns purple when exhausted) and fixer remover (turns from blue to yellow when exhausted) may be flushed down the drain with hot water. Exhausted fix (check using hypo-check from Gang Room) must be dumped into the used fix drum in the Gang Room. If chemicals are not exhausted at the end of a printing session, place them in the appropriate 1-gallon jugs located in each private darkroom. Do not leave your chemicals in the darkroom.
When finished with the Private Labs make sure to clean the sink, counter and floor behind you. Do not leave chemical stains on the counters and floors. Sponges and are in the grey cabinet near the mat cutting table. Brooms and mops are corner by the couch. Also, remember to throw out any trash and remove any clutter from the room. The Lab should always be left in at least as good condition as you found it, if not better.
Check out of your lab at the end of your session with the Lab Monitor on duty.
-Any violation of the above policies will result in a ONE-WEEK SUSPENSION from the Private Labs.
- A second violation of any of the above policies will result in a THREE-WEEK SUSPENSION from the Private Labs.
- A third violation of any of the above policies will result in LOSS OF PRIVATE LAB PRIVILEGES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEMESTER.
