Introduction
The curriculum in art history reflects the belief that a liberal arts program, supplemented by travel, is the best preparation for students who wish to teach the history of art at the college level or work in museums and galleries. Students will not specialize in a particular area such as Renaissance or Modern, but will acquire a general knowledge of the history of art. Courses in areas such as history, philosophy, and literature are recommended as electives, both as supplement to undergraduate courses in art history and as a background for future graduate work. Art history majors are required to take courses in studio art as a means of better understanding what is involved in the art making process. It is important that students make every effort to travel to major museums in this country and, if possible, abroad. The M.A. degree requires 38 hours of course work, a thesis, and a reading knowledge of French, Italian, German, or another language most relevant to the student’s major area of inquiry.
